Cherry and Smaller Fruits

Picture
I grow a lot of cherries. These beautiful plants hold there own in any flower garden. What could be better than an edible, ornamental plant? Always reliable, even in our hot summers, these tiny taste treats appeal to children of all ages and most adults as well. When I set up my first garden all I planted was cherries, and they still command at least sixty percent of my allotted tomato space. There is nothing quite as pretty or tasty on a summer’s day as a big bowl full of a dozen or more colored cherry tomatoes of all shapes and flavors.   No vegetable garden is complete without ‘em.

Blue, Black & Purple Fruit

Picture

As a category ‘Black Fruit’ tomatoes are considered to be very rich in flavor. As a bonus most of these varieties are reported to fair well in high temperature regions. Their reputations are growing quickly, try a few and find out why. I would love to offer many more varieties of “Black Fruit’ so please let me know of your interests.

Green & White Fruit

Picture

Oooh ! Now we are getting somewhere!!!
Incredible flavors await those with patience; Most 'Green' 'maters will show a little hint of amber yellow on the 'shoulders' when they ripen; a sure tell of sumptuousness. For the last two years "Green Doctor's" has been a favorite, so I have expanded this section for 2013.

Yellow & Orange Fruit

Picture

Orange and yellow colored tomatoes are often thought to be less acidic than their red cousins, but this is not so. There higher sugar contents don’t replace the acidity, but only serve to mask it. Only the Bi-colored fruit are typically considered ‘sweeter’.  These are the gourmet’s favorites for the beauty and flavor they bring to every dish.

Striped & Bi- Colored Fruit

Picture
Arguably the fastest growing 'category' in tomato culture, as more people discover the complexity of flavors held within these beautiful fruits. Sweet & tangy, bold & juicy, true sensory overload! Often hiding a citrusy/pineapple kick... Once upon a time these jewels only came in whopping 2 lb. plus sizes. With a lot of breeding by taste save people, many new smaller fruited varieties- more heat tolerant - are now available. When two colors combine, like with the sweetness of the yellow and the acidity of a red, the flavors are often off the charts !!!

Pink & Red Fruit

Picture
Ok... This is where most folks start, and yes, I will concede that I too tend to have a wandering eye towards a pretty red tomato... After many years of brainwashing by the local grocer, I thought all red 'maters tasted like cardboard. After a trip to Tomatofest(c) a few years back I realized that even a red tomato, when left to vine ripen, could have some pretty decent flavor! Momotaro was the standout at that fest, but others can be pretty darn tasty as well; but I still prefer a 'Black' Fruit - just me, but again 'I am the  expert'. You may disagree and prefer the acidic flavor of 'Red' fruits, what does this mean = Your wrong!

Paste Types

Picture

When you say 'Paste Tomato' to most folk, they think "Roma", which is a type of 'Plum Tomato'... What makes one variety better than another for this use is the thickness of the flesh and a typically reduced seed cavity. The following list includes those tried and true varieties, along with a few others which would make some mighty fine and flavorful sauce even a Sicilian grandmother would be proud of!

Container Growing

Picture
O.k. it is true that one can grow anything in a container...
But a few of the varieties I offer are better suited by their determinate nature. Determinate means that they will grow to a certain (smaller plant) size and set a lot of fruit at one time, and yes they can flush again and again with proper care and more than a few prayers.

Below the list of varieties are a few special tips for trying potted tomatoes; Good Luck!

"Dwarf" Tomatoes

Picture
A very cool world-wide breeding project
(OK, Australia and Alaska mainly),
with the goal of creating flavorful new varieties - mainly indeterminate -that grow less than 5' tall; many MUCH shorter!
Fantastic for container culture, strong central stems and heavy 'rugose' foliage, they all require staking as the heavy fruit-set will pull them over.
