         When you say 'Paste Tomato' to most folk, they think "Roma", which is a type of 'Plum Tomato'... What makes one variety better than another for this use is the thickness of the flesh and a typically reduced seed cavity. The following list includes those tried and true varieties, along with a few others which would make some mighty fine and flavorful sauce even a Sicilian grandmother would be proud of!

Black Pear - (Aka 'Japanese Black Trifele)
Dark brown tomatoes are shaped like miniature pears and flavored with an excellent, rich taste. Green Sausage
Sausage-shaped 4" fruits are defined by yellow stripes, revealing kiwi-like green flesh when sliced. Bushy plants produce 6 to 8 fruits per truss, and require only moderate staking for high yields. Very ornamental, but also flavorful enough to hold its own with the best of the paste tomatoes.

Yellow Fire

Amish Gold -
Back from 2015, and previous years  Ok... actually seed came from Diana's, but I've been getting them from TF for the last decade; One of my personal all-time favorites - back for 2015! Cross between Amish Paste and Sungold. Ind. regular-leaf tomato plants that yield HUGE crops of 1 1/2"-2" long, oblong shaped, gorgeous golden tomatoes with sharply-pointed end. Fruit has the gold color and flavor of the Sungold, the meatiness of the Amish Paste and delicious sweet/tart tomato flavors that will have you wanting more! This is a perennial favorite tomato in my garden. A rare tomato variety.

Black Plum - Very popular
SOLD out in2016 - A very prolific Russian strain, whose brownish-gray fruits are so sweet and meaty that some prefer Black Plum to Roma for making sauces. Also excellent when used in salads or for drying. Oval fruits average 2 to 4 oz., and turn a deep mahogany-brown color at maturity. One of our best yielders for both fresh market and home use.

Blush - Ind. 75 days. - Like 'Juliet' but with FLAVOR!!!
NEW FOR 2013 Delightful little tomatoes are about 2 inches long and shaped like elongated grapes. They start out clear yellow, but later blush with pink streaks, announcing they are ripe and ready to pick. Expect heavy production throughout the season and a fabulous flavor that is sweet, fruity and refreshing. Fred Hempel of Baia Nicchia Farm in California developed this truly unique variety.

Principie Borgese -

Purple Russian - SOLD OUT in 2016!!!
Ind. 80 days. Looks and grows like a paste type, but with a little more juice; Delicious purplish, egg-shaped fruit are smooth and perfect. They have no blemishes and have flavor that tops the charts. One of the best varieties we carry for salsa, fresh eating, and preserving. The plants are very productive; fruit weigh about 6 ounces. This variety will make market gardeners and chefs happy, as this Ukrainian heirloom is at the top of its class and a favorite of all who taste it!

San Marzano Paste -
A little later than Roma, with superb flavor in slightly rectangular-shaped fruits, 3-1/2" x 1-1/2", that are bright red and hang in large clusters. Holds well on the vine and in storage. Extra-high solid content is perfect for canning.

Sweet Orange Roma - Compact
From Tomatofest (c). 75 days. When I had the opportunity to attend the event many years ago this was THE variety that stole the show for me. An prolific producer of large, 1 1/2 x 3-inch, very pretty orange, meaty and great tasting Roma tomatoes. Late producing variety even as weather gets cool.
Smallish plants with the classic thin, wispy foliage of most paste types.
